Peace Education
Aquariums and Zoos are places of Peace. They unite all human cultures with the natural world, and teach how important it is to respect and conserve our wild ecosystems. Mother Nature embodies Peace – her ecosystems, animal societies, and plant communities exhibit concepts of Peace, such as Cooperation, Interdependence, Unity, and Non-Violence. We can use her examples to teach Peace to our kids and our communities.
What are the Design elements?
We use a multi-faceted approach. We examine your programs; we play with Peace; we provide resources and examples; we let you create your stories! Through our 1 to 3-day Peace Education Design Workshops, you will discover how biodiversity and peace are connected, and be able to incorporate these concepts and stories into your school programs, group programs, teachers’ resource packs, and community events.
• How do Monkeys practice Peace? Mutual-grooming is an act of Peace (non-violence, cooperation, trust, respect) – it keeps the troop’s social bonds cohesive and the hierarchy intact.
• How does an Ant Colony practice Peace? Building their colony is an act of Peace (cooperation, interdependence), where all work in harmony, efficiently to produce remarkable architecture.
What are the Benefits of Teaching Peace?
Teaching Peace concepts, Peace tools, and Peace games to children can give them a framework from which to think, speak, and act, and to create a new world using a peaceful mindset. Adults can bring these Peace principles into the workplace, relationships, and one’s inner self.

Incorporate Peace Curricula
The Earth matters! Teach students about the cultural and ecological impacts that human development, values, and choices have on the Earth’s natural systems. This is the essence of Peace - interdependence, cooperation, unity, non-violence, respect, trust. When we choose to share the planet with animals, we choose Peace. When we choose to work with local cultures to preserve wildlife, we choose Peace. When we make choices to not build on a wetlands, or not purchase an endangered species, we choose Peace. When we choose to learn about each other, and work together for the benefit of all, we choose Peace. Come join us in weaving Peace principles into your Education Programs, and helping to promote dialogue on Peace in everyday life.
Use The Arts to Teach Peace
Music, drama, poetry, painting, drawing, dance, creative writing, puppetry, masks - these are all ways that can be used to teach Peace. Kids love taking a Peace concept and making a skit on the “un-peaceful way” and the “peaceful way” to live it! In 2009, we worked with PAPY (Performing Arts Program for Youth; www.papyonline.org) to have their youth write, direct, and act in a play on Peace. Come let us assist you in using The Arts to actively illustrate the practice of Peace!
Use Animals to Teach Peace
Animals are great teachers. Not only can Peace concepts be taught using animal stories, behaviors and scientific facts, but also Nature itself can fully demonstrate Peace. Much like the exercises in “No Student Left Indoors”, children can connect with the peacefulness of Nature and learn new insights, while observing plants and animals outdoors. Animals draw out children’s imagination. When Peace concepts, as well as virtues (like courage, kindness, etc.) are discussed, children can readily imagine and see the connections of Peace throughout the Animal Kingdom, and learn from these examples.
